Still going strong....

The beginning of summer seems to be a time when everyone gets out of the routine and they let things just happen....
Adults and kids alike, this is necessary occasionally, but then you have to establish a new routine. I will speak from experience here by saying, you will regret it if you wait until September to get "back on track". Some things can just flow during the summer, but then there are important elements like fitness, health, and wellness that can not just be at chance. Take your health seriously....enjoy the lakes, the swimming holes, and the kids even more by taking care of yourself!! All of the summers best activities are better enjoyed if you feel great!

Don't underestimate them....

Kids are capable of being aware of their fitness.....

They always want to know more and they are constantly craving new information.

So, here are a few kids who know how good it feels after you have gotten your heart rate up. They are also aware of good snacks vs. bad snacks and they challenge each other with how much water they can drink. We don't worry about diets or calories, just about having good ol' sweaty fun!!!

The Community of Crossfit

During the last week, I rented my house out for SXSW. It just so happened that the two guys that rented it were crossfitters from Seattle! It is amazing how just being "crossfitters" makes a bond, opens a new line of communication that would not be there, and creates a family with strangers! What we are doing, is more than "just working out". It is creating bonds, families, and long time friends! I often forget that I am not just a member of Crossfit Kids, nor of Crossfit Central alone, but of a larger enormous family of Crossfit! I love it!!
Plus, no one else would appreciate zone foods being left in their fridge!

Crossfit Kids vs. The Moms

This morning the crossfit kids worked out with the Crystal and the ladies in the Lake Pointe Bootcamp. By request of the the kids, they did the same workout as their moms to kick off spring break. It was difficult, but I must say that the kids deserve a tenacity award for sticking with it and finishing!!
Morgan, Emilee, and Grace you ROCKED!!!!
Getting fit and having fun with your parents, now that is what it is all about!!!!

The FASTEST, The STRONGEST, The BEST!!!!!!

Everyday I think about how I can get faster, stronger, and better...

When I leave the gym, I have a little self reflection time and I think about what I should have done, could have done, or wish I had done...

I challenge myself by thinking that I could have gone heavier, I could have run a little bit faster, and I should have finished sooner.....

I see it in the kids and the adults alike, I think it happens to all of us or at least I hope so...

Even though it is not always easy, I hope every person challenges themselves, but knows that the race is within. It really doesn't matter what anyone else can do, it is all about pushing yourself to the edge of what is possible. It helps me to have others there so I know what is possible, to encourage me, and to push me, but when it comes down to it, I must challenge myself. Those questions should be welcomed and not discouraged. Somedays we are on top and sometimes not, but as long as we stay in the race, we are still improving!

If we all felt like a super hero in every workout, we would probably get bored and quit. So, thanks to all of those people in my classes that push me to be better, get faster, and do more! I am inspired daily and you are all super heros in my eyes!!!

And, here goes one more day of PUSHING!!!!

Effort

"Nothing great was ever achieved without great effort" Theodore Roosevelt

It is when your mind starts telling you that you should stop, that you should keep pushing to see results! If it isn't a little scary then you are probably not pushing yourself hard enough!

The 4 R's

The 3 r's, Reading, writing, and arithmatic have a new friend!! A new R...... RECESS!!!
Finally, there is some new research that supports the dire need that kids have for playing! I know that when I was teaching school, the first thing that would be pushed aside was play time... I have attached an article that talks about the results that kids may receive in the classroom if they are allowed time to play outside. It is essential!

Well: The 3 R's? A Fourth Is Crucial, Too: Recess

The best way to improve children's performance in the classroom may be to take them out of it.

CHAMPS

I love stars and sunsets, traveling, and getting in a good workout, but really the best thing ever to see is when life slows down enough for me to witness two people helping each other out, especially kids!!! I know that there are fantastic video games, 3d movies to see, and computer technology that can inspire superhuman effects, but there were some real life superheroes or "Champs" beyond all of that at WAYA on Sunday afternoon. They were doing the bunny hop, toe taps, med ball tosses, star jumps, and relays. Every time that Jeremy said "GO" they would surprise me with tons of effort, encouragement, and action. Coaches and athletes alike, you were all an inspiration for my Sunday!

P.S. JDP has a spectacular star jump! I have got some work to do to be like that~! wink wink

Ah suga' suga'....

As I work with kids there is one thing that continuously surprises me..... it is how much sugar kids are consuming! Sugar raises insulin levels, promotes the storage of fat, depresses the immune system, promotes tooth decay and gum disease, and has no nutrients or vitamins. I encourage you to be "in the know" when it comes to those little treats....

http://drrobyn.wordpress.com/2008/03/13/pour-some-sugar-on-it-how-much-sugar-is-in-my-childs-food/

Amount of sugar in these common children’s foods
Food Sugar Content
Honey Smacks=15 grams (almost 4 teaspoons) per ¾ cup serving
Frosted Flakes=11 grams (almost 3 teaspoons) per ¾ cup serving
Eggo Orig. Syrup=40 grams (10 teaspoons) per ¼ cup serving
Chocolate-Strawberry Poptarts=17 grams (4+ teaspoons) per pastry
Twizzlers=19 grams per 4 piece serving
Ketchup=4 grams (1 teaspoon) per teaspoon of ketchup
McDonald’s Chocolate Triple Thick Shake=111 grams (28 teaspoons) per 21 ounce shake 168 grams (42 teaspoons) per 32 ounce shake
McFlurry with M & Ms candy=85 grams (21 teaspoons) per 12 ounce cup
Chocolate Milk=24 grams (6 teaspoons) per serving
Coke=40.5 grams and Dr. Pepper=41 grams

10 teaspoons=40 grams
Would you give your child 10 teaspoons of sugar on purpose? I know that we get busy but we must stay educated!! These are our children! They deserve the best!

Lake Pointe Kids get creative....

The new program at Lake Pointe is exploding! These kids are so fun because they just keep going and going and going..... They have set new records for games like "minute of doom", that they love, and seem to really like creating lots of new challenges like "5 minutes of madness" and new run ladder sequences. Their creativity is going to push this program to all new levels of fun fitness!!!

Who is that family?

Crossfit Kids was recently highlighted in the Crossfit Central newsletter, along with a great video made by Nicole. If you have not seen it yet, you should go check it out!

Were you wondering, who is that family pictured in the video??? I think that I need to introduce that trend-setting group!

They are a family who began training several months ago. At first, they thought that they just wanted their daughter to get into shape, but after some discussion they decided that it would be best if the whole family took on this endeavour together!!! It has been amazing for me to watch them grow and change individually, as well as a family. They motivate one another and have made it a commitment to make fitness and health a priority. It is so exciting for me to watch a family who prioritizes spending time together, getting down and dirty, and improving themselves while they are at it!(Check them out, it was a rainy day and they got dirty!)

If you asked them if it is easy to make this time, they would say no, they are just like any other family with a million things to do, but they are there three times a week~! With work, after-school activities, homework to do, and dinner to plan, there are definitely obstacles, but they always still make it and say that they look forward to how they feel afterwards!! I am ecstatic about their progress, the confidence that has been built, and their eagerness! They are an amazing family!

A family that works out together?....That must be the coolest thing since the hula hoop!!!!!

WAYFit HENRY!!!

A Super Wayfit Crossfit KID!! Henry has been coming to WAYA (West Austin Youth Association) for a program called WayFit for a few months and he has been smashing through his goals and old fears! The super speed of the camera was on accident, but it is an example of how fast he is developing!!! The "minute of doom" game, in the second video, was his least favorite game, but now he kills it! I am thrilled with his progress and love seeing his excitement!!

Come join Henry at WAYA on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5!!!

I Am CrossFit on Vimeo

I Am CrossFit on Vimeo

I am Crossfit because....

Left: Aug. 2008

Below: Aug. 2007

I am Crossfit because the workouts challenge me mentally and physically, therefore I challenge myself throughout the day to use that same momentum to complete daily tasks better!
I am Crossfit because I have Lupus, but it doesn't have me!

I am Crossfit because it gives me energy, strength, and most of all a great feeling to be alive!

I am Crossfit because it makes me feel like I can do anything!

I am Crossfit because the community is inspiring!

I am Crossfit because I want to be happy and healthy!

My purpose is to share life with others....When my body feels good, I feel good, and then I am able to help others more! However, if I do not make my body a priority, I have nothing to share with others.

I started Crossfit about 3 and 1/2 years ago, in Zach's bootcamp. I had been tired, sick, and had lost some weight before finding out that I had Lupus. I was bound and determined to get healthy, just to see if I could "outrun" the diagnosis. After a good 3 months of being the slowest runner and the biggest whiner, I quit bootcamp with the excuse that I couldn't afford it anymore, since I was a teacher. I was not willing to negotiate other parts of my lifestyle for my health, so I kept living the way I had been. At my "box" gym, I tried to recreate the excitement that I had in Crossfit, but quickly became bored of the treadmill and saw no results.

After 6 months of being out, I made a concious decision that I couldn't "outrun" my illness, if my health was not a priority. So, I picked up a side job, just to pay for Crossfit, and I went back to bootcamp. The old phrase "where there is a will, there is a way" is my motto! I frequently brainstorm about how I can do more, get more, and best of all give more!

My diet has changed from Taco Cabana and Miller Lite's to Zone friendly foods that give me energy, instead of making me want to take a nap!
I recently had to buy almost all new clothes, because I have dropped from a size 10 to a 4 and have lost about 15 pounds. I went from 32% body fat to 16%.
In 2009, I have a long way yet to go, but I hope to increase all my max weights, decrease my body fat a little more, and hopefully inspire others to love their body enough to treat it well!
What you put into it, you will get out of it!
I promise!
